Bringing Nature Back Into The Home
Household cleaning remains a constant in our everyday lives. We like fast, efficient and inexpensive products for this mundane activity. There are hundreds of products on the market, most specific to one type of cleaning. The choices to make are difficult and storage space for the various products is an issue. Cleaning does not have to be such a chore. Many of the household products on the market are toxic to our homes and the environment and are expensive.
Natural products, whether homemade or store bought, are a great alternative to the many man-made chemical products on the store shelves. The environment has many options to clean your home from shining chrome to getting rid of mildew in the bathroom. Nature's choices are just as effective, with the exception of giving little or no negative results to our inside or outside environment. I have referenced quick, inexpensive and environmentally friendly alternatives that have been lost in the shuffle of "better" living.
Vinegar and water are the main ingredients for good general purpose cleaning of tables, floors, countertops and much more. Vinegar is a great disinfectant and odor absorber. Mix half parts water to half parts vinegar in a spray bottle or air pump. An air pump is a new item that is easily located in a major department store in the kitchen aisle. Please do not use old spray bottles as the residues of the previous products linger and the chemicals are not healthy for you or the home. For a nice fragrance, add a few drops of essential oils to the vinegar mixture. Essential oils are easily accessible. Some of my favorite choices are lavender, grapefruit and lemon balm.Learn about some other great cleaning ideas here.
Baking Soda is a great deodorizer and abrasive. Sprinkle the soda on soiled pots and pans and scrub clean. As well, sprinkle over sinks in the bathroom and kitchen. Rinse well and the sinks will shine brightly. If the area has stubborn stains leave the soda for approximately ten minutes, then scrub and rinse the area well. As a deodorizer sprinkle on the carpet and let sit for several minutes and vacuum the soda up. If you want a scented soda, add 1to2 drops of oil to approximately one cup of baking soda.
Baking soda and vinegar are great for cleaning clogged drains and to maintain your home drainage system. Sprinkle about one cup of baking soda down the drain. Slowly add one cup of vinegar and watch the reaction. Let sit for approximately 15-20 minutes then pour boiling water or very hot water down the drain. The result is amazing.
Making air fresheners for your home are quick and inexpensive. One example is to saturate a cottonball with an essential oil in a small open container. Another option is to add essential oils to baking soda and distribute through the home in decorative jars. To get the entire house smelling fresh in moments, simmer citrus peels (cinnamon sticks are a great choice at Christmas). Place citrus peels of your choice in a small pot and cover with water and simmer on the stove. A great site which lists a variety of aromatic oils and their attributes is Aromystique.
Cleaning your home, the natural way, takes a little rearranging, but after the initial learning is complete, you will be happy for the change. Bringing nature in the home instead of man-made chemicals is a healthier choice for your home environment and for the vast environment that surrounds us. The generation of today needs to revisit the old trend of basic living.
